Minnesota Nice

According to Wikipedia, “Minnesota Nice is a cultural stereotype applied to the behavior of people from the state of Minnesota, implying residents are unusually courteous, reserved, and mild-mannered compared to people from other states. The phrase also implies polite friendliness, an aversion to open confrontation, a tendency toward understatement, a disclination to make a direct fuss or stand out, apparent emotional restraint, and self-deprecation.”
Well, Minnesota Nice certainly doesn’t seem to exist right now, for crowds of people in the Twin Cities have protested the presence of ICE and have “openly confronted” ICE agents as they attempted to arrest migrants, so they can be later deported. Unfortunately, two Minnesota citizens were shot and killed during the confrontations.
After the shootings, there certainly was no “understatement” or any “disinclination to make a direct fuss.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey immediately called the ICE agent who shot Renee Good a “murderer,” calling the claim of self-defense “bullsh*t” and telling ICE to “get the f–k out” of the city. From someone who incessantly talks about protecting Minnesota values, Mayor Frey evidently forgot about the value of fair trials and being “innocent until proven guilty.” Governor, Tim Walz wasn’t much better, declaring that Good was killed for no reason, and he portrayed ICE as terrorizing the state.
President Trump reacted by calling Governor Walz and by assigning White House Border Czar Tom Homan to oversee federal immigration efforts in Minnesota. Democrats should be happy with that news. After all, in 2015 Homan was serving as executive associate director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations. That is when President Obama honored Homan by selecting him for the 2015 Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Service. This award is the nation's highest civil service honor, given annually by the president to top career executives and senior professionals who demonstrate "strength, integrity and commitment to public service."
We’ll note here that, according to figures from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, between fiscal years 2013 and 2015, under Obama’s direction and Homan's leadership, ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations deported more than 920,000 illegal immigrants from the United States. That figure includes 534,000 individuals with criminal convictions, setting multiple agency records.
That was less than fourteen years ago, but now it seems like an eternity. Back then there was a consensus among Democrats and Republicans that immigrants who came to the United States illegally should be deported. Now it is different. Many Democratic leaders vociferously oppose deportations, and have created "sanctuaries,” where illegal immigrants receive benefits, and have no fear of arrest by local authorities. Furthermore, those same Democratic leaders have ordered their law enforcement officials not to cooperate with ICE, even in regard to the deportation of criminals living in their midst.
It’s a fact that Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Kristi Noem, and other federal officials have petitioned both the governor and the mayor on multiple occasions to allow DHS, ICE, and Border Patrol into jails and prisons so that criminal illegals can be released directly into DHS custody. That hasn’t happened, and many Democratic leaders still have refused to assist the federal government in enforcing immigration law – until now, that is.
On February 4, Border Czar Homan announced that “effective immediately, 700 federal immigration officers will leave Minnesota following “unprecedented cooperation” from state and county officials. “This unprecedented number of counties communicating with us now and allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement to take custody of illegal aliens before they hit the streets means fewer federal agents are needed to make arrests there.” However, about 2,000 federal immigration agents will stay in Minnesota to arrest illegal aliens. They will remain focused on apprehending illegal aliens with criminal records, but “if you’re in the country illegally, you are not off the table.”
That last statement by Homan is very important. It is only common sense that the DHS prioritize the deportation of criminals, but it remains the policy of the United States to deport all immigrants that have entered this country illegally. Americans who disagree have every right to protest, but they do not have the right, in our opinion, to interfere with any legal official as they arrest and deport. As former President Obama once famously said, “elections have consequences". President Trump openly campaigned that he would attempt deport all of the people who crossed the open border that existed under former president Biden, and he is doing just that.
In some of our most recent articles we have argued that the open border policies of former President Biden were very detrimental to the poorest of the poor who legally reside in the United States, and we believe that by reversing the tide, and sending all the illegal immigrants back where they came from, would, at the very least, improve the financial well-being of American citizens. The bottom line is that the United States has too much debt, and it cannot financially support all the people who want to live here.
We’ll end by pointing out just one graphic example. The sanctuary city of Chicago finished fiscal year 2024 with a $41.1 billion gap between the money it has available to pay bills and the obligations it owes. Where will it get extra money needed to help the illegal immigrants? The Mayor wants to get more money from the state of Illinois, which is also facing a steep budget deficit. Where will the sanctuary state of Illinois get any extra money? It wants the federal government, which is facing a $2 Trillion deficit, to send more money its way, and the only way that can happen is for the federal government to borrow even more.
This is unsustainable. U.S. cities, states and the federal government are borrowing their way into bankruptcy. We are borrowing from the future to pay our current bills, and it is our children and grandchildren who will ultimately have to pay the stiff price!
